Some FAQ of IPTV

 Why IPTV?

The full form of IPTV is Internet Protocol television, it is the delivery of television content over Internet Protocol networks. This is in contrast to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television formats. Unlike downloaded media, IPTV offers the ability to stream the source media continuously 

What is IPTV set/Media renderer?

It receives the IPTV signal and renders it on the screen.

Why it is needed?

It makes possible to see the video content.

 

What is Set-top box/Interaction device?

It Captures user input and sends it to a central interaction server.

Why it is needed?

It makes sure the user’s interactions get to the IPTV service provider, and can be used to change the content of

the show.

 

What is Home network?

Connects the different types of equipment in the home together.

Why is ir needed?

Makes it possible for different media stores, renderers and interaction devices to interact with each other, and services on the global network

 

What is Home gateway?

Manages addressing in the home, registration with the service provider, and filtering of content (the last

two functions can also be performed by the set-top

Why is it needed?

As a firewall and address management system, and to ensure that the user’s actions are authorized

 

What is IMS proxy?

Captures the request for the video service and makes sure it gets to the right receivers, including the QoS system.

Why is it needed?

Interconnects the network and signalling planes of the system, and makes sure the service requests get to the right nodes. Also connects to the profile management system

 

What is QoS system?

Instructs routers in the network how their queuing mechanisms should be set up.

why is it needed?

Without QoS, video can be delayed and result in degraded user experience.

 

What is IMS identity Management?

Makes sure the user is who he claims he is, and connects the use of the identity to the relevant subscriptions (and hence charging)

Why is it needed?

Without identity management, anyone could use anyone else’s services; the charging systems would have to  work offline and with special tokens to keep track of who should pay for what (as it is now)

 

What is IMS presence and profile management?

Keeps track of what the user does and has done; makes sure this is registered in the system

why is it needed?

Makes it possible to personalize content, and to know what other users are watching (if they allow the user to see it)

 

What is IPTV streaming service control ?

Manages the video stream, including switching to a different video stream when the user selection demands.

Note that this is not the same as channel switching

why is it needed ?

Makes sure that the program is started when requested, and eventually creates programs from different video sources automatically on the fly

 

what is IPTV streaming service delivery?

Handles the streaming of the content over the network. Interacts with the QoS Management

Why is it needed ?

Makes sure content gets where it is supposed to go

 

what is Advertising insertion ?

At selected points in the media stream, pastes in video sequences which contain commercial  messages (although this could be a generic mechanism)

why is it needed?

Puts advertising in the right place in the program

 

what is Interactivity server?

Captures the interactivity requests (from the user’s IPTV session), collates them (if required), and sends to the appropriate server(s), such as charging, profile management and streaming service control

why is it needed?

Interactions which come from more than one user need to be collated and coordinated, otherwise they will not result in anything.
